Implications of Non-invasive Mechanical Ventilation in Lung Transplantation. Old and New Frontiers?

As lung transplantation has become more successful, the selection criteria have broadened; however, some relative contraindications to lung transplantation are controversial. Some programs consider mechanical ventilation to be a major contraindication to lung transplantation because airway colonization with bacteria may lead to nosocomial infection and respiratory muscle deconditioning may necessitate prolonged postoperative ventilatory support.

Effects of Selenium Nanoparticles on Bleomycin-Induced Pulmonary Fibrosis in Rats

  Abstract Background:   Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is one of the interstitial lung diseases. To date, most drug trials for the treatment of IPF have yielded disappointing results. Recently, selenium nano-particles (SeNP) have received attention for potential use in treatments, due in part to their established abilities to exert size-dependent anti-oxidant/-inflammatory effects. Materials and Methods:   the rats were treated with SeNPs by intraperitoneal injection (0.5mg SeNP/kg) for five consecutive days in the inflammatory phase (a day after injection of bleomycin) and fibrotic phase (a week after injection of bleomycin). Results:   The results showed that administration of SeNP during the inflammatory phase improved the activity of enzymes antioxidant (i.e., glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase) and also led to significant decreases in interleukin (IL)-6 and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in lung homogenates. Complication and Sequelae of Pulmonary Tuberculosis: A Tertiary Care Center Experience

  Abstract Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is a grave infectious disease caused by the bacillus Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB). Pulmonary tuberculosis remains an important public health problem globally and one of most common infectious disease. Tuberculosis can cause wide variety of complication respiratory or non-respiratory. We studied complication and sequelae of pulmonary tuberculosis. Methodology: A prospective observational study was conducted, the study included all patients presenting with complications of tuberculosis in newly diagnosed and previously treated patients referred to the Pulmonary Medicine Department. Patients not willing to give consent for the study or the patient with incomplete data were excluded. TB was diagnosed on the basis of sputum Gene Expert, Line Probe Assay and Conventional Drug Sensitivity testing.
